"RENT in JAZZ" (with Gary Mazzarropi and Charles Fambrough (bass), John Mosemann (drums) )was recorded on spec in the studio about 1998 at the passing suggestion of Robert Woods, CEO of Telarc Records. The work had been difficult to translate into jazz as it was itself a hybrid Rock-Opera whose excitement depended greatly on its exhilarating Rock Riffs. However, its storyline - a contemporary version of Puccini's "La Boheme" ( a tale that romanced the deaths of artists) - took place n Manhattan's East Village, and could have been about jazz artists struggling with Heroin. The music is after all countercultural, or about the culture of youth. The original music was mainly Rock, but also an amalgam of salsa, Motown, be-bop, and reggae - also celebrating Sondheim and perhaps Bacharach. The selections are presented in an order that is independent of the order in the show.
