"The Attention" is a unique musical offering. It was as atypical for the mid-1980s as it is now. It follows the fragility of human attention from extreme to meditative focus with many variations in between. It is based as much on the creation of textures as structural elements as harmony and melody. This was typical of the tack that Mark created early-on, but likely prematurely abandoned. The sounds of synthesis were admittedly limited, used in clumsy fashion, but unique back then. There are strong influences of classical and Middle and Far Eastern forms. Themes are logically woven throughout. The syncopated unisons which pepper the piece are a striking mixture of classical and rock.
