In this mid-2000 recorded collection, the Sound of Music is the Sound of Jazz. Re-mastered in 2017, the recorded trio sound with Gary Mazzaroppi (bass) and John Mosemann (drums) is stunning. Also surprising on relistening to this work are the advanced treatments given to the material. Yet the trio manages to return to a melodic sound and at times a strong sense of swing groove after interspersing exciting tensions. The show is treated with respect but also a ton of irreverent whimsical parody. One of the tunes ("the Nun Maria") pays unexpected homage to composer Bill Evans. Given the wealth of raw underlying material, it is remarkable that the only selection that made its way into jazz vernacular had been "Things, My Favorite" (here cast in a mood all its own.) This collection is one that listeners who are entirely unfamiliar with the show will likely relish regularly rotating on their playlists. Those familiar with the original tunes are in for a pleasant shock. For those taken with an impressionistic trio, jazz will likely wonder why "Going on Seventeen (from Sixteen)" never made its way into a "Real Book" as a general vehicle for improvisation.
